Impact Observatory works with world leading experts from the UNEP World Conservation Monitoring Center to create operational dynamic carbon mapping capabilities at global scale.


Building from the recently published Nature Map carbon layer, this work leverages IO’s core capabilities for producing high resolution land use land cover (LULC) maps over time. Operationalized dynamic carbon maps will be able to detect changes in above-ground vegetation and monitor the resulting shifts in nature-based biomass carbon storage.

Identifying the changing nature-based sources and sinks for carbon will be critical for tackling climate change and can enable more quantified monitoring of carbon offsets/credits and market based climate solutions.
